![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Barbara Sklar has been in the auction/antique business for over 20 years. At age 16 she worked her first auction, held at the local Marriot Hotel in Northern NJ.
She was absolutely amazed by the amount of excitement generated at the auction. Watching what she considered 'ordinary' items sell to an enthusiastic crowd of bidders for thousands of dollars absolutely astounded her! It only took moments for her to realize that those "ordinary" items she had mistaken for "junk" while walking through homes of friends, family and neighbors were actually sought after "antiques and collectibles". By age 19, Barbara found herself in yet another avenue of the antique business. This time her job was to travel throughout the northeast seeking antique furniture at local garage sales. Long Island was her favorite hotspot to find great buys! Every two weeks, she would travel to Texas to auction off the garage sale finds....Let's just say, she watched as an 'ordinary' end table ( yes, you know we are talking antique) that she purchased for $75.00, auction to the winning bidder at $5,000!!! The education she received on 'market value' TRULY was valuable. In 1994 she was again involved in a family business of buying and selling. This time the main focus of the business was in coins and stamps. Barbara brought to the table her knowledge of antiques and collectibles, estate liquidation and auction experience. The family business expanded and flourished however, her focus was on raising her children and establishing herself as a sought after fashion & celebrity event photograher. In 2006, successful fashion photograher Barbara Sklar, recognized that her love of antiques and collectibles was calling her back yet again. With the encouragement of her mother, brother and partner, she decided to open a quaint little shop in Waldwick, NJ. Initially the shop was going to be exclusively antiques and collectibles however, with the rising excitement in the coin market and gold prices at a high, she decided Coins and Collectibles would make for a most interesting store. Hence, BERGEN COUNTY COIN & COLLECTIBLES was born. Sadly, just as the Grand Openning was to take place for this new venture, her beloved mother was quickly overcome by her battle with cancer. Barbara had hoped to have her mother's hand working beside her in the business, so it was quite a heartache. Thanks to the excitement of friends and customers calling to find out when the store would be open, she decided to move forward with the business. "I knew that openning the store was the right thing when my very first customers actually thanked me for 'taking care of them' and 'treating them right'. Immediately, I felt that my mother had put me where I needed to be before she passed." With the encouragement and support of her relentless partner, Barbara opens the doors to the shop that treats people right, helps customers sell their household contents for the best market value and assists clientel in finding those sought after collectibles. Come on in and say Hello! You never know what you might find in the fabulous and ever changing boutique!
